Pandora’s Box met with drastic editing in almost every country it was released in, but not all for the same reason. The French version, called Loulou, retained the often cut lesbian countess and actually rearranged the scenes and altered the text in a way to make Alwa not Dr. Schön’s son, but his lover. It’s quite possibly the only time in history a gay subplot has been cut into a film.
The tacked-on happy ending in American release was so laughably bad, some theatres actually pre-emptily apologized for it before running the film. In it, Lulu goes to England not to become a whore and die, but to join the Salvation Army and work to save Alwa and Geschwitz and restore their lost lives.
