Biography

Fritz Schulz was born in the city of Karlsbad in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present day Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) on the 25th of April, 1892 and began acting in 1910. In the silent period, he enjoyed success in supporting roles in popular Ewald André Dupont films such as Whitechapel in 1920 and Children of Darkness in 1921.

In 1919, he co-stared in Richard Oswald’s landmark gay-rights film Different From the Others opposite Conrad Veidt, playing the role of his boyfriend, Kurt Sivers.

With the advent of talkies, his film career grew and his parts became more prominent, playing such characters as Georg Lenz in 1930’s Only You and Jan in the 1931 film The Beggar Student. It all came to an end, though, when the Nazis blacklisted all Jewish actors in 1933. Schulz, along with Rudi Loewenthal and Erich Morawsky, started an independent studio of their own, but were forced out a business after only one film.

He returned to the screen in the 1950s before retiring, acting occasionally on television until his death in Zurich, Switzerland on the 9th of May, 1972
